Sunflower Seeds

Last weekend we unfortunately had to say goodbye to our sunflowers. With the remaining part of hurricane Katia set to hit the UK, I knew they wouldn't withstand the high winds that were forecast.  The flowers on some of them became so big that the heads were weighing down the plants and some of them were starting to die off.

At the end of our Sunflower competition, the winner was Paul!  His plant reached a record 8 foot tall and the flower measured 39cm in diameter.

We have now cut the plants down and will be making some bird feeders from the seeds. The children have been taking the seeds out of the middle of the flowers and we have saved some ready to sow next year.

Sunflowers

Our sunflowers are loving all the sun and rain we've had today!  Paul's is currently standing at 2 metres. Lilly's was the first to flower though.  The flower is huge and the hover bees and butterflies love it!

Planting Out

Just a quick blog to say we have now taken our Sunflowers out of their pots and planted them in the ground today with the children's help.  We will continue to water and measure them and watch them grow week by week.  We can't wait to see how tall they get!

The Great Sunflower Race!

Our sunflowers are doing really well.  We have been busy measuring them today.  The children helped by holding the tape measure at the bottom of the stem. We read out the numbers as we measured them and logged the measurements of each sunflower on a chart I made.

Paul's sunflower is currently in the lead at 550mm!  I think I will have to start putting Miracle Grow on the rest of ours so that we beat him! Hehe.
